- The pieces I create aren’t just jewellery they are wearable design. I experiment with what Piet Mondrian referred to as ‘systematic art’. Taking basic geometric forms I experiment with their form, line and composition to create jewellery that is justified by a system of order or grammar of design. The jewellery I construct is a contemporary expression of the aesthetic language of early Modernism, and possesses a design aesthetic that unites form and function. My studio practice explores the interface between craft, art and design, and addresses three predominant issues that arise from this exploration. These are: the relationship between functionality and decoration in craft; craft’s potential to impart on design an intrinsic personal meaning or ‘intimacy’ through the element of the handmade; and design’s ability to be used not only as style but as content. What remains important within my work is the inner coherence of the design itself. Following a rational approach to designing and constructing my works I explore these notions adhering to three fundamental concepts: a notion of order, clarity of form and space, and significant contrast.
